Geodatabases are sophisticated storage containers for feature classes, feature datasets, relationship classes, and rasters.

Geodatabases come in three types: file, personal, and enterprise (or multiuser). In this chapter, you will create and work with a file geodatabase. A file geodatabase is designed to store datasets in a folder of files on your computer. It can store large datasets (up to one terabyte) and can be accessed by several users at the same time, although feature classes can be edited by only one person at a time.

The original geodatabase introduced by Esri is the personal geodatabase (.mdb file extension). It uses the Microsoft Access data file structure and supports databases that are 2 GB or less. However, the effective database size is smaller, somewhere between 250 and 500 MB. Anything larger causes the database performance to slow down. For this reason, file geodatabases (.gdb) are recommended over personal geodatabases, particularly because datasets tend to grow larger over time.

Enterprise geodatabases are scalable multiuser geodatabases that can accommodate large work groups or enterprises. Using technology called versioning, enterprise geodatabases permit simultaneous editing of feature classes by different users. These geodatabases have no size limit or maximum number of users. Data is stored in a relational database management system (RDBMS), such as Microsoft SQL Server Express, SQL Server, Oracle, Informix, IBM DB2, or PostgreSQL.
